A 25 year old man committed suicide at the World Trade Center site in NYC. His suicide was apparently over President Bush's reelection (but no suicide note was found).

Just how pathetic and sad can it get? And geez... the election only affects the next 4 years... this bone-head's decision was final forever.

From the AP:

NEW YORK - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush's re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.

*extremely insensitive statement warning* Well. There's one person that's not strong enough to take it in the world now. *extremely insensitive statement warning*

 Talk about melodrama!

Ok so killing oneself over a lost presidential election is not the most effective way of dealing with it, but, um...someone's dead...so how about not trivializing it. Just a thought.
on Nov 08, 2004
He took his own life willingly because his candidate lost an election. Even killing oneself because of being dumped by a girlfriend makes more sense. It's too ridiculous not to trivialize. Should be King of the Darwin Awards!
on Nov 08, 2004
I'm surprised suicide rates over there haven't doubled since the election.
on Nov 08, 2004
Whether he killed himself willingly is beside the point. The man had a fiancee, a family, a life. The amount of grief that his actions caused those close to him is not something to be made light of.

I'm sure someone is going to tell me that he deserves derision for not thinking of all those that his actions would affect. That derision, however, should certainly not come from us. That is a feeling to be dealt with by his family, when and if they feel that anger for what he did.

So lets analogize. Say there's a soldier in Iraq. Say through some ridiculous action of his own judgment he gets himself killed. Do we trivialize that as well?

We have soldiers committing suicide in Iraq.

And here's a human example of a soldier being killed as a result of his own actions.

He left behind a wife and two little boys.

If the soldier committed suicide because his D&D character died, I'd trivialize his death too.

First of all, why do you feel the need to trivialize any human death? That's sick.

And what does a silly game have to do with any of this? The man in NY killed himself because he was distraught, presumably about the fate of the country and/or the world. Many men have killed themselves in Iraq because they were distraught over the death and distruction and hopelessness they had seen. This is not trivial in the least.

I'm sick like that. That's why I think movies such as Naked Gun that trivialize death are funny. I'd also think that the Darwin Awards to be entertaining if not for the fact that unlike this idiot, they don't all purposely kill themselves.

Yeah, somebody who kills himself over a "silly" game (to some it's a way of life!) is short-sighted, irrational, and overreacting, but not somebody who kills himself because his candidate lost an election, and I wouldn't compare killing oneself because of facing death in the face to killing oneself because one's candidate lost. Then again, I also know that if Kerry won, it wouldn't be the end of the world, no matter how much he'd want to change the nation to my detriment, but then again, I'm not retarded. Perhaps this guy was, and if so, then I apologize for belittling his death, for it was not his fault that he lacked the ability to comprehend reality sensibly.
If this guy really thought that Bush would destroy the world, then he should have waited until Bush actually started destroying it before he killed himself. If Bush manages the four years without destroying it, then boy will he look stupid!

So, make believe entertainment and true human tragedy are all the same to you, then?

Here's the thing, messy . . . as the trite saying goes, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I agree that it was foolish for him to commit suicide in anticipation of what might come from Bush's second term. However, when someone kills him or hermself, it is likely that he or she is unable to see past the big crushing weight of *insert problem here*, whether it seems insignificant or silly to outsiders or not. That is tragic. The man needed help . . . do you not agree that someone who takes his or her own life (possibly with the exception of those who are terminally ill and suffering) is burdened with a mental illness of sorts?

I realize that sarcasm is your debate tool of choice, and maybe it's just the flaming PC liberal in me, but I don't think ridiculing someone for taking his own life is a humane or proper thing to do.

It's completely appropriate and humane. He deserves two Darwin Awards for his ignorant and selfish (so he thought Bush would bring Hell on Earth, and yet he's going to let his family suffer it?) actions. In fact, I'll even award him my very own Natural Selection Award!
Mental problems he has indeed, but that doesn't excuse his actions anymore than it excuses the actions of anybody else, from rapists to molesters (who I believe are also afflicted with mental illnesses because who in their right mind would ever commit such atrocities?), so until the world can learn to pity rapists and molesters rather than condemn them, I'll see it entirely appropriate as to do the same.

Whatever. You go on ahead. Please excuse me if I don't join the party.

My only comment on this will be...let's just say a little prayer for the man's family; hope they get through this...and a prayer for our soldiers, too...
my cousin is in Kuwait now..will be heading to Iraq within the next few weeks...his orders say he will be back in 2006...im gonna say an extra long prayer for him....And his older brother...well, he is there working for a company....sigh...hope they will be safe.
